WJH&A supplied 3-D drafting services for exterior 11-gauge stainless steel open-joint Pohl Euro-Plate panel system. Complex geometry of the tower cab, coupled with the inability to field measure prior to fabrication (schedule related), further dictated the need for these services. 3-D drafting services did not stop at the submission drawing stage. The resulting intricacy of all parts and components from the façade’s unique geometry dictated all fabrication (part drawings) work be done and checked in 3-D. This process made fabrication of all components and parts efficient and accurate for the manufacturer, but most importantly allowed them to manage and maintain schedule.

W.J. Higgins & Associates, Inc. was contracted to design, engineer, survey, produce production shop drawings, test and to provide quality control services for the over-cladding of this building. The existing curtain wall mullion grid was salvaged. New glass, glazing gaskets, joinery seals, and exterior pressure plates and covers, and veneer were incorporated into the work. The existing exterior veneer, of which had failing finish as well as being leakage-prone, was left in place, and with the addition of non-permeable membranes, became the air/vapor and water resistant plane, of which also supported a new (added) exterior wall insulation. A new open-joint, drained, back ventilated and pressure-equalized aluminum composite panel system, job specifically developed, provided the new veneer over-clad.

All work was completed with no disruption of company service operations.

  2. It personifies the peripheral character of our product not normally highlighted in a building envelope consulting interview; attention to constructability and labor jurisdictional issues, work area accessibility, and guidance of the engineered products supplied and delivered.

Our design solutions for this enclosure was more about the “construction communication” than it was about clever detail solutions.

Our most important contribution to the success of this project was “EXPERIENCE”. We know the manufacturers who can and will fabricate appropriate products with reliable delivery. We also know all manufacturers have limited awareness of field construction reality, building code and safety and that they are uncomfortable and less reliable when put in that arena.

The installed skywalk enclosure assembly was field tested for air and water resistance quality employing pressure differentials of 6.24 and 12.00 psf respectively. There was no water penetration and the measured air infiltration rate was .01 cu/ft./min per square foot of specimen. This is a testament to our ability to define and deliver reliable continuity of air, water and vapor resistance planes. Those skills have been especially honed for heating climate humidified buildings.

All work was completed with no disruption of company service operations.
